Yummy Crusty Bread


Yummy Crusty Bread - good for homemade soup bowls

Combine and sprinkle with sugar:

5 C. warm water

1 Tblsp yeast



Let rest 5 minutes



Add:

1/3 C. sugar or honey

1/4 C. oil

1 1/2 C powdered dry milk

2 C. old fashioned oats



Let sit for 5-10 minutes



Add:

2 Tblsp. salt

12 C. white flour - more or less to make a soft dough.



Knead 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl & cover. Let rise 1 hour & punch down. Let rise 40 minutes & punch down. Let rise 20 minutes & punch down. Let rise for 10 minutes then knead & shape into 4 equal loaves (or 8-10 soup bowls) and place in greased loaf pans & let rise 1 hour. Bake at 450 for 12 minutes. Turn down heat to 350 & bake for 30 minutes. Remove from pan. Brush crust with shortening & cool.



This bread is a lot of work, but it is so worth it - so yummy!
